Inca

The Inca market and parking (2010), designed by C. Muro and Ch. Lay, skillfully adapts to the surrounding building scales. The market’s volume extends the roof and concrete wall to detach from the traffic of c/Born and incorporates the parking ramp. In 2019, the Inca City Council proposed pacifying c/Born, integrating the facades into the square, and enhancing the connection with the Call. As part of this plan, the proposal involves demolishing certain elements and redefining the square.

To maximize the relationship between the square and the perimeter facades, certain elements, such as the extension of the roof and wall up to the parking ramp, will be demolished, while preserving the essential components for the supermarket and underground parking’s operation. The new square must address several aspects, including the natural ventilation of the underground parking, the entrance and exit to the parking, the mechanical ventilation of the supermarket, the emergency exit from the underground levels, and the transformer station.

The existing elements with regular geometries will be unified to maximize the green area over the parking lot, enhance the visibility of the perimeter facades and the market, and complete the market’s volume with a new pergola. This will align with the market’s architectural logic. The unification of these elements will help create new public spaces such as bench-gardens for ventilation, a staircase for the emergency exit, and a transformer station pergola at the market entrance.

The new Market Square will serve as a central activity hub, catering to the market's needs, such as Dijous Bo and outdoor stalls, and also benefiting the entire city. It will play a key role in revitalizing the Call of Inca, improving pedestrian access to the historic center, and providing greater visibility to both the market and the facades.
